I would like to perceive myself as a “Designpreneur – the art of marrying the right and left half of the brain together to achieve tangible breakthroughs” with a firm belief in “Design” as an innovative tool to solve complex problems. Graduating from Mangalore University with a distinction degree in Interior Design, I started my career as an Interior Architect in the year 2006. My initial experience in an organizational format as an Interior Architect marked a very important stepping stone towards working in teams, communication, and management. With my keen interest in design and ability to handle challenging objectives, I quickly moved up the ladder from being a Jr. Designer to a Team leader in a mere time span of two years. This swift escalation in my career span of an Interior Architect helped me to be part of few National and International projects particularly in the area of Retail and Hospitality, thus further opening my inquisitiveness to pursue “Design” from a much larger perspective.
In the year 2008, I was selected for a post-graduation program in IT Integrated “Design for Retail Experience” in the prestigious design school, National Institute of Design (NID), India. This program, taught in a unique multi-disciplinary design approach system opened up my horizons of perceiving “Design” in a much larger context. My first stint as a “Designpreneur” started during my tenure in the institute, where I had the privilege to be part and lead many ongoing industry projects being undertaken by many senior faculties as part of their professional consultancy grant provided by the institute, thus enabling me to realize the length and breadth of “design” and its “application” across various industries. With this understanding and honing my design skill sets in IT integrated design discipline, I further opted to intern with the FMCG conglomerate, Procter and Gamble in their Global Innovation Centre for a total duration of ten months. This being their first of its kind approach to hiring from a non-management background by the company, was to foresee a new perspective to achieve better breakthrough solutions. During this tenure of my association with the company, I was largely considered as an integral team member by working directly with the brand managers of the portfolio brands and other top management of the company towards incubating many futuristic projects. I also designed the methodology of the work process from a design thinking perspective and brought in a new dimension to the existing team in order to solve challenging problems. Overall, my tenure within Procter and Gamble enabled me to meticulously identify human needs, their concerns and develop solutions from the ground up to the market that would best work as a win-win solution for all the involved parties such as the brand, channel partners, and the consumer. During the end of the carried out design intervention process, the company witnessed a 3X growth in the consumer interaction with their brand products, thus making the whole association successful.
Post my graduation from NID and with my learning’s from the past, I further developed deep interest in understanding people, systems and to pitch in the value of “Design” across various industries and in particular to the segment of our society who was ignorant of the importance of “Design” in their business drive. This along with a few colleagues from NID paved a way to the inception of a multi-disciplinary design studio, in the year 2010. Since its inception, apart from honing my skillsets in design, I have been largely overlooking the Strategic and Creative Design Development process across projects and to ensure that every element of the consulting business is designed well and designed holistically across the multidisciplinary design disciplines. In the process, I have also been building and managing design teams and dealing with business stakeholders from diversified industries and enabling them to reimagine their customer experiences, reinvent their business models and off recently help them to digitize their core businesses by providing the required capabilities and partner ecosystem to build strong products which can drive the involved stakeholders interest. With this, by taking up such challenging objectives from its inception to delivery, the studio has grown rapidly both in terms of its recognition and the scale of projects handled, and most importantly the unprecedented value and success rate the studio has brought across all its consulting projects till date.
With this experience of building a consulting service platform from scratch to a self-sustaining model, I have further tapped my abilities to be pragmatic in order to rapidly gauge the need of the other person and assess a wide range of solutions in a short time frame and master diversified skill sets such as thought leadership, a great team player, project management and business administration in order to build effective solutions.
In recognition to my multi-faceted career so far, I am also being invited as an external jury member since 2016 by NID to evaluate the graduation projects of the Mater Degree students at NID, and also provide appropriate feedback in terms of their work, presentation and career prospects.
However, in today’s complex and fast-changing world, my present interest largely remains in problem-solving via “Design-Thinking” over “Business Development” and building much greater solutions, preferably in a omnichannel/digital space with meticulous attention to human-centric values and to further evolve and contribute towards working in a diversified group of like-minded folks and making our world a much better space to live.
